Manchester United must pay £50m for Wan-Bissaka

 

Manchester United face the prospect of making Crystal Palace right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka the most expensive defender in their history to sign him this summer, claims The Daily Mirror.

 

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made signing a new right-back a top priority following their woes in that position this season.

 

Antonio Valencia is leaving United when his contract expires and Matteo Darmian is also free to find a new club this summer.

 

Ashley Young’s form tailed off dramatically towards the end of the campaign and Diogo Dalot still has a lot of development ahead of him.

 

Despite the fact Wan-Bissaka is only 18 months older than Dalot, the Palace right-back is already considered one of the best full-backs in the Premier League.

 

The 21-year-old has been a standout performer for Palace since breaking into the first-team at the start of 2018 and has also been linked with a move to Manchester City.

 

Despite insisting he will remain at Palace for next season, United are still pushing to sign the England Under-21 international this summer.

 

Palace preference is to keep Wan-Bissaka but will listen to offers if their stunning £50m valuation is met.

United’s record buy in defence is Victor Lindelof, having paid £31m to Benfica to sign the Sweden international back in 2017.

 

However, the going rate for top quality full-backs is now £50m, as Manchester City set the bar when they signed Kyle Walker and Benjamin Mendy in the same summer as United acquired Lindelof.

 

Wan-Bissaka registered three assists in his first full Premier League campaign but it was his defending that made him stand out.

 

In fact, only Wilfred Ndidi (143) and Idrissa Gueye (142) made more tackles in the Premier League this season than Wan-Bissaka (129).

 

Furthermore, Wan-Bissaka was remarkably only dribbled past 10 times in the league this term, which is incredible considering his position and the opponents he comes up against.
