City creative spark out of Madrid clash

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has revealed David Silva has been ruled out for the return leg of their Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid next week.

Silva, 30, has been plagued with reoccurring muscle injuries all season and the Spain international could only manage 40 minutes in the 0-0 draw against Madrid last week before breaking down with a hamstring problem.

Pellegrini had been careful to manage Silva’s playing time for the season run-in, but the City No.21 has now been ruled out for another three weeks, meaning he will also miss their massive league fixture against Arsenal next weekend.

Interestingly, however, City’s record in the Champions League is actually better without Silva in the starting XI. Since August 2010, they have won half of the matches Silva hasn’t started compared to just 37% of those that he has.
