Navas narrowly misses out on Madrid record

Real Madrid shot stopper Keylor Navas came within five minutes from breaking Miguel Angel’s 40-year record of 431 minutes without conceding a league goal at the start of a season.

Navas, who had looked set to join Manchester United over the summer, has started the current season in fine form and had kept a clean sheet in each of Madrid’s first six games in all competitions.

However, he was cruelly denied the chance to rewrite club history when Sabin Merino’s 67th minute goal meant the Costa Rica international came just five minutes short of Angel’s record, which has stood since the 1975-76 campaign.

It wasn’t all bad news, however, as Madrid’s 2-1 victory over Athletic Bilbao ensured they leapfrogged Barcelona to top of La Liga for the first time in seven months.
