Bayern Munich rocked by injury blow to key player

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after fracturing his foot in their Champions League exit to Real Madrid on Tuesday night.

Neuer played the full game as Bayern were beaten 4-2 by Madrid in extra-time to crash out of the Champions League but played the final 11 minutes with a broken foot after suffering it just before Cristiano Ronaldo sealed his hat-trick to put Madrid 3-2 up.

The 31-year-old had only just returned from a foot injury to feature in both legs of their quarter-final encounter but Bayern’s CEO, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, has hinted Neuer will miss the rest of the domestic campaign and also the build-up to the Confederations Cup, which starts on June 17.

“Neuer will miss eight weeks,” he told Sport Bild, via ESPN. “He sustained the injury during the 3-2, which was offside. I am incredibly angry. We were robbed.”

It means that Bayern will have to play the rest of the season with back-up goalkeeper Sven Ulreich, who has only made three appearances all season.

The 28-year-old has won two of those three Bundesliga matches and only conceded two goals in that time, in matches against Hoffenheim and Borussia Dortmund.
