Bastian Schweinsteiger’s boyhood club, TSV 1860 Rosenheim, have revealed that Manchester United only paid Bayern Munich £6.5m for the Germany international this summer.
It had been reported that United had lavished in excess of £12m for the 31-year-old this summer, who had one-year remaining on his deal with the Bundesliga champions.
However, United have actually only paid half of that fee to Bayern following a statement released by the Germany captain’s first club.
“The transfer free adds up to €9m (£6.5m),” the club announced on their official website.
Schweinsteiger, 31, has made an encouraging yet not entirely convincing start to life at Old Trafford. The Germany international has only completed 90 minutes once in six appearances this season as he looks to build his fitness under Louis van Gaal.
