Karius eyes No.1 shirt beyond this season for Liverpool

Loris Karius is out to prove to Jurgen Klopp he doesn’t need to sign a new goalkeeper at the end of the season.

The German has struggled to adapt to the Premier League since joining from Mainz in 2016 but has been installed as Liverpool’s No.1 goalkeeper until the end of the season.

Liverpool were heavily linked with January’s moves for Roma goalkeeper Alisson and Atletico Madrid shot-stopper Jan Oblak but Karius insists Klopp doesn’t need another goalkeeper.

“If you read the press as a Liverpool player, then every week we would have five new signings in every position,” The Daily Mirror quote Karius as saying. “You can’t go crazy about the speculation.

“When I look a the training, I think we do have good quality already with the keepers. Of course I was happy with the manager’s decision [to make me No.1].

“You get more into a routine game by game, but I know I need to keep performing. I just want to present myself well and then I’ll have the chance to play at this club for the next season as well. That’s the challenge facing me personally.”

Klopp has rotated between Simon Mignolet and Karius in goal since the start of last season but now the 24-year-old has a real chance to stake a claim as the club’s goalkeeper for the foreseeable future.

Of goalkeepers that have made at least five Premier League appearances this season, Karius has the worst save success rate (53.3%).
