Real Madrid have successfully concluded a deal to prize David de Gea away from Manchester United after reaching a deal in the region of €35m (£29m) with Keylor Navas going the other way as part of the deal.
United had been determined for Madrid to eclipse the world-record £32.6m Juventus shelled out to sign Gianluigi Buffon in 2001 in order to secure the services of the Spanish goalkeeper, but they have abandoned that stance at the final hour.
Rafa Benitez's side have been chasing the 24-year-old's signature all summer having released Iker Casillas following 25 years of service as Madrid's No1 goalkeeper at the start of the window.
De Gea, meanwhile, has been forced to watch United’s first six games of the season from the stands, but has finally seized his dream move back to the Spanish capital following four years at Old Trafford that have seen him develop into one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
Louis van Gaal had continually insisted throughout the summer that De Gea was not for sale, but the club were effectively powerless to keeping the Spain international, who would have been able to become a Galactico on a free next summer.
