Barcelona scout Manchester United target

Barcelona deployed scouts to watch Manchester United target Nelson Semedo during Benfica’s routine 3-0 win over Nacional at the weekend, reports Portuguese outlet A Bola, via Marca.

Semedo, 23, was heavily linked with a move to United in the January transfer window as Jose Mourinho looked to strengthen his defence but the Premier League outfit opted against tabling a formal bid last month.

United are still thought to be weighing up a move for the Portugal international at the end of the season but could now face competition from Barcelona, as Luis Enrique ponders whether to add the right-back to his current defensive options.

Barcelona decided against signing a natural right back this season despite the fact they lost Dani Alves to Juventus last summer and Semedo would be a natural fit in a position where Sergi Roberto, naturally a midfielder, has mainly operated this season.

However, with United reportedly mulling a €40m (£34m) move for the Benfica ace, Barcelona could be priced out of a deal given their recent financial difficulties.

Only Alex Telles (5) has registered more assists of all defenders in the Portuguese Liga NOS this season than Semedo (4).
