Spurs star set for spell on sidelines

Tottenham's title ambitions has been dealt a setback after they confirmed that star defender Jan Vertonghen has suffered medial collateral ligament damage in his knee.

Vertonghen, 25, has been one the best defenders in the Premier League this season and his partnership with Toby Alderweireld has been key to Spurs' stellar start to the campaign.

The Belgium international was forced off Spurs' 3-1 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday with a knee injury and scan results have revealed he has sustained knee damage.

Spurs, who are now only five points off the top, haven't put a time span on Vertonghen's lay-off, but it is likely to see him miss at least the next few weeks.

Vertonghen had featured in every single minute of Premier League action for Spurs up until being brought off in the 75th minute against Palace.

Moreover, only Kyle Walker (54) has made more interceptions in the league for Spurs this season than Vertonghen (53)
