Tottenham keen on Southampton midfielder

Tottenham have earmarked Southampton midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg as a potential transfer target for the summer, claims The Daily Telegraph.

Jose Mourinho wants to bring in several new faces at the end of the current campaign but will have to wait to find out how much money he will have to spend.

Clubs around the world are waiting to count the cost of the coronavirus pandemic and it will have major ramifications on expenditure this summer.

It has even been reported Mourinho will have no money to spend at the end of the season and will have to strengthen through free transfers and loan signings only.

However, Mourinho has identified former Bayern Munich prodigy Hojbjerg as the right type of midfielder to improve his current options if given the chance to spend.

Southampton paid £12.6m to sign Hojbjerg from Bayern in 2016 but it has taken until this season for the Denmark international to really make his mark on the club.

Hojbjerg has just over 12 months left to run on his existing Southampton contract and reportedly turned down an offer of a new deal earlier this year.

Failure to secure Hojbjerg's long-term future by the start of next summer would leave Southampton vulnerable to a cut-price offer from any suitors.

The Southampton captain has won possession all over the pitch at least 38 more times than any other player in the Premier League this season (287).
