De Gea must play to stay in Spain squad, says Del Bosque

Vicente del Bosque has warned Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea he must play regularly if he wants to keep his spot in the Spanish national squad.

De Gea’s proposed move to Real Madrid fell through in the final minutes of the transfer window in La Liga on Monday and has now returned to Manchester to try and rebuild his United career.

The 24-year-old’s relationship with manager Louis van Gaal is reported to have broken down severely in the last few weeks as the United manager has omitted his No1 goalkeeper from United’s opening six games of the season in all competitions.

When asked if he would speak to De Gea about his current situation at United, Del Bosque told Marca: “No, but if I do feel the need to talk to him about it then I will say something. He needs to be professional and move on from this episode.

“I hope that he starts playing again and is happy, and if he plays well we can bring him along, otherwise if he doesn’t play it will be very difficult for him to come [to the Euros].”

The former Atletico Madrid shot-stopper was understandably distraught over the collapse of his dream move but will have no choice but to work hard to get back into the United starting XI if he wants to turn out for Spain at the European Championships next summer.
