Southampton have announced Mark Hughes has put pen to paper on a three-year deal running until 2021.
Hughes landed the Southampton job in March on a deal to the end of the season but has been rewarded with a permanent contract after steering the club clear of relegation.
Southampton’s players called for Hughes to be given the role on a full-time basis and the south coast outfit have now confirmed the 54-year-old on a three-year deal.
“Mark [Bowen], Eddie [Niedzwiecki] and I are thrilled to have signed long-term contracts with the club,” he told Southampton’s official website. “It was the only option we considered, having spent the last eight weeks with the club.
“Now it is vital that we take the unbelievable support we received from the fans during the last few games into next season.
“The staff and the players will work hard every day to deliver the success this club deserves, and with everyone pulling together we will achieve our goals.”
Southampton have spent the last five seasons in the Premier League but their top-flight status was severely under threat this term with as few as two games to go.
Despite only winning three of his 10 matches in charge, Hughes did enough to fend off relegation and finish three points clear of the bottom three.
