Everton have announced Phil Jagielka has put pen to paper on a new one-year deal keeping him at the club until June 2019.
Jagielka had entered the final 12 months of his contract this summer and there were suggestions he would leave Everton following the arrival of Michael Keane from Burnley.
Ronald Koeman is also alleged to be looking to sign another centre-back before the transfer window closes but the Everton manager has opted to keep the experienced 34-year-old defender around for at least two more seasons.
“I came back for pre-season and tried to get my fitness levels as high as possible, ready to compete for a place,” Jagielka told the club’s official website.
“It is always nice to have the potential of an extra year with the club – and it did not take too long for me to decide to sign.
“I was delighted to do so and I am looking forward to the journey over the next two years.”
“It has been a fantastic time here but, hopefully, we will create some special memories in the next two years and I can look back on my time at Everton with a smile on my face.”
Jagielka has been a mainstay in the Everton side since joining from Sheffield United in 2007, but his gametime will be limited next term.
In the Premier League last season, only Jose Fonte (4) conceded more penalties than the Everton veteran (3), while no outfielder has committed more errors that have directly led to an opposition shot on goal in the last two campaigns (Jagielka - 8).
